London's Lost Rivers: A Secret History

Tom Bolton explores five lost rivers, combining their history (and demise) with fascinating anecdotes.

When people think of London's river, the vast thoroughfare of the Thames immediately springs to mind. But this ancient city was built around other rivers too - and traces of these still remain for those who know where to look. In Celtic Iron Age religion, every river had a tutelary goddess, so this talk opens up a new dimension of London - her spirits of place. Tom Bolton explores five lost rivers, combining their history (and demise) with fascinating anecdotes. He brings alive the people and events surrounding each location and the story of each river's origins and decline. This one is for everyone who loves the hidden side of the magical place that is London.

Under our feet, away from the omnipresent Thames, a secret network of underground rivers snakes beneath the capital. The rivers predate the city and its people. The rivers may be buried, but they still flow underground. In some places they can be heard, or even seen. By rediscovering them, and tracing their courses, the way we see London is transformed. Using the visual and aural clues left in the streetscape, we can burrow down through layers of London history to river level, revealing the city as it once was. Tom Bolton is a researcher and writer, the author of London’s Lost Rivers: A Walker’s Guide: a series of ten walks tracing these hidden routes across London published in September 2011 by Strange Attractor press.
