Why is macroeconomics such a mess?

Global Policy public lecture

There is very little agreement across the economics profession as to what macroeconomics actually consists of. Seventy-five years after the publication of Keynes's General Theory this lack of agreement has led to a weak and confused response to the international financial crisis/recession. In this lecture John Eatwell will identify the underlying flaws in much macro-economic analysis and suggest an (uncomfortable) way forward.

This event marks the publication of his latest book The Fall and Rise of Keynesian Economics co-written with Murray Milgate.

John Eatwell is President of Queens' College, Cambridge, and a member of the House of Lords. Having taught economics at Cambridge since 1970, Professor Lord Eatwell is currently Director of CERF and CFAP and Professor in Financial Policy. From 1980 to 1996 he was also a Professor in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, New York. He has been a Visiting Professor at Columbia University, New York, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University of Amsterdam. Lord Eatwell is also an elected foreign member of the Italian Academy of Sciences.

From 1985 to 1992 he served as economic adviser to Neil Kinnock, leader of the British Labour Party, and was responsible for much of the work that led to a substantial re-alignment of the Labour Party's economic policies. In 1988, together with others, John Eatwell set up the Institute for Public Policy Research, one of Britain's leading policy think-tanks. He remains a trustee of the Institute. From 1997 to 2002 he sat on the board of the Securities and Futures Authority, Britain's securities markets regulator, where he developed his interest in securities regulation. He was a member of the Regulatory Decisions Committee of the Financial Services Authority from 2001 until 2006.
