IRISH AND WELSH PERIODICALS: TWIN TRADITIONS

This lecture will address the nature of periodical culture in Ireland and Wales and compare genres of periodicals from the nineteenth century through to the present day. The talk will end with a brief comparison of the contemporary scene in the two countries.


Examples will include:

Cardinal Wiseman’s Dublin Review (1836); Charles Wilkins’s Red Dragon (1882);

Owen M. Edwards’s Wales (1894); John Eglinton and Frank Ryan’s Dana (1905);

Keidrych Rhys’s Wales (1935); Sean O’Faolain’s The Bell (1940)

John Ryan’s Envoy; Raymond Garlick’s Dock Leaves (both 1949);

Michael Smith’s Lace Curtain (1969); Peter Finch’s Second Aeon (1971).
