Dealing with the dead: Mortuary practices in Mesolithic north west Europe

Mortuary practices in Mesolithic north west Europe

The hunter-gathers of the Mesolithic (c.9600-4000BC) were some of the first communities to bury their dead in formal cemeteries and inhumation has been regarded as the norm. Yet a huge variety of mortuary practices were still carried out, varying in the way the body was treated and where the body (or parts of it) were deposited. This lecture by Dr Amy Gray Jones from the University of Chester, will explore the significance of these practices for our understanding of the way in which Mesolithic hunter-gathers viewed death and the dead.
