The Human Genome - 21st century medicine

Gene discovery is being exploited in cell biology, leading to new developments

Professor Timothy Aitman, Chair in Clinical and Molecular Genetics, Imperial College, and Chair of Molecular Sciences at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, speaks about his research combining the use of classical genetics with genome technologies to investigate the genetics of common human disorders. The work he has led has mapped and identified disease genes for defective insulin action and diabetes; for the autoimmune disease systemic lupus; and for cardiac enlargement. His work was among the first to establish individual variation in gene copy number as a cause of common human disease. The goal is to link genetics and genomics to every medical speciality within Imperial College. An over-the- horizon view of the coming genetic revolution.
