Welding and Joining Developments in the Aerospace Industry

Evening talk on the materials issues for welding and joining in the aerospace industry. By Richard Freeman, TWI.


This presentation will cover developments in the welding of aluminium, titanium and nickel alloys for airframe and aircraft engine components by arc, laser, electron beam (EB) and friction-based processes. The manufacturer of additives for laser welds will be covered in the talk, as will techniques for the joining of composite materials, and developments in non-destructive inspection. Finally, a new development on the metallic coating of composite materials for lightning strike protection and thermal management will be shown.
