Culture Now: Sarah Turner and James Mackay

Moving image artist Sarah Turner discusses feminist filmmaking in Britain with James Mackay. Sarah Turner is a founder member of Hysteriography, a group of British female filmmakers, writers and curators and Director of Fine Art at University of Kent.

Her feature films Ecology (2007) and Perestroika (2009) are characterized by explorations of technologies, experimental approaches to writing and an engagement with experiences of narrative, immersion and embodiment within the long form film. Sarah has also curated projects including Hygiene and Hysteria: The body desired and the body debased; touring programmes of Artists film and touring programmes of Artists film and video for the Arts Council of England, as well as programmes for Tate Gallery and the National Film Theatre.

James Mackay is a British film producer and curator. After working as Cinema Programmer for the London Film-Maker’s Co-op in the 1970s, McKay went on to produce a series of programmes titled New British Avant-Garde Films for the Edinburgh International Film Festival, as well as programming for the Berlin Film Festival and becoming curator of Film and Video at the B2 Gallery. He additionally established a production and distribution company named Dark Picture, specialising in new film and video, where his first producing project resulted in a series of shorts created in collaboration with Derek Jarman. James Mackay has since produced films for many international film festivals as well as for Channel 4 and the BBC, and has won multiple awards.
