Dr Nigel Spivey, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, explores the technical, social and aesthetic factors behind the formation of the bronze male nude in the fifth century BCE, when sculptors such as Myron, Pheidias and Polykleitos created a type that has come to define the Classical era. We may be familiar with this type, largely thanks to Roman marble copies, but how did it come about in the first place?
