John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent was American-born but artistically international, a fin de siecle portrait painter who lent a gloss and glamour to sitters from the aristocracy.

John Singer Sargent was American-born but artistically international, a fin de siecle portrait painter who lent a gloss and glamour to sitters from the aristocracy, the stage and the fashionable social world, old money and new. His swiftly executed watercolours, however, demonstrate a lighter touch and a fresh approach deriving less from academic “Old Master” traditions than from Impressionist innovations, while the work he produced during World War I exhibits a compassionate response to a world in upheaval.
