HOW WE LIVED THEN: LIFE AND LOVE IN LATE MEDIEVAL ART / THE HOME

While primarily religious, medieval art teems with information about ordinary life from birth to death and all stages in between. Saintly figures jostle a supporting cast drawn from all walks of life and engage in activities that range from the sublime to the ridiculous. We explore the diverse, charming world of late-medieval imagery and consider the society it brings to life and the cultural messages it carries.

These lectures will attempt to reconstruct in imagination a medieval life story from birth to death. Religious imagery became more and more domestic and anecdotal as the medieval era wore on. This lecture concentrates on the Mérode Altarpiece, produced in the workshop of Robert Campin c 1420 in the south Netherlands, and considers its representation of the Virgin as a well-to-do housewife in a comfortable middle class interior.
