The Canterbury Tales are a splendid evocation of life in medieval London. They epitomise the age of pilgrimage and the influence of medieval church life. Chaucer was a vintage Londoner living from about 1345 to his death in 1400. This course will focus on his poems and fourteenth century London life.
The Romans built London Wall and much of it was restored in medieval times. Much still remains and we will walk its circuit from the Museum of London through the Barbican development, to Hounsditch and Coopers Row to the point where it joins the Tower of London.
