The Canterbury Tales are a splendid evocation of life in medieval London. They epitomise the age of pilgrimage and the influence of medieval church life. Chaucer was a vintage Londoner living from about 1345 to his death in 1400. This course will focus on his poems and fourteenth century London life.
During this walk whilst viewing the exterior of buildings, we will trace the layout of the Isle of Thorney and see how much Chaucer would have known: the Palace, the Abbey, Westminster Hall, the Jewel Tower and the surprising survival of the street system.
