Covering 500 years, 38 patrons and several continents, this course is an examination of audacious acts of patronage and how they resulted in some of the finest art collections in the world.
Emperors Go-Yōzei (r. 1586–1611) & Go-Mizunoo (r. 1611–1629) & Empress Tōfukomon'in of Japan
Emperor Go-Yōzei was highly cultured as was his son Go-Mizunoo. Both revived convents for imperial women and Tōfukumon’in – Go-Mizunoo’s principal consort – studied painting with Kano Nobumas. She also presided over theatrical gatherings, tea ceremonies, and poetry competitions as well as co-commissioning artworks in all media for devotional purposes and as gifts.
