Picturing Partition

Mother and Child as theme in art by Chris McHugh.

The mother and child theme runs deep in Western art from Renaissance Madonna and baby paintings to modernist reinterpretation (eg. Picasso and Modersohn-Becker). The theme figures in contemporary art too, aside from Heidi Tikka’s work - Gillian Wearing, Bill Viola, May Kelly etc. We examine examples across the ages to explore the theme’s meaning and mechanics.

Part of the exhibition events programme during ‘Mother, Child & The Double’, two interactive installations by Heidi Tikka at Fabrica until 19th December.

Chris McHugh is an artist and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at University College Chichester.
