Saturday Evening Lecture Series 2015

Robert Douglas Fairhurst
'The Story of Alice: Lewis Carroll and the Secret History of Wonderland'

In this lecture, Robert will discuss his definitive biography of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell and the book that shaped us - published for the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Alice in Wonderland.

This book traces the lives of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, and the richly various afterlife of the story that would forever link their names. Its action will move from the gossipy intrigues of Victorian Oxford to the trenches of the First World War and from the backstage world of the London theatre
to the early days of Hollywood. It will involve Victorian magicians, artists, models, actresses, ghost-hunters and child prostitutes. It is a mixture of biography and cultural history, weaving together several strands of narrative to show how the Alice books helped to shape the lives of everyone involved in their creation.
