The London Course: Exploring Growing Village Suburbs

The growth of London in recent centuries entailed the swallowing up of small villages deep in the countryside.

This course will examine what have now become extensive London boroughs. Each which will be described in lectures followed by walks through these historic areas and each should be treated as an integrated pair of topics.

Walk through Islington

We will begin on the Pentonville Road at the Angel. From there we will concentrate on the heart of the original village at Islington Green, High Street, and Essex Road. All this area has a remarkable collection of historic buildings - very early cinemas, spacious pubs, music halls, and the famous antiques area of Camden Passage. Our walk will take us on to the considerable remains of Islington's Georgian Houses, the New River and the Regent's Canal.
