Some Society Angels of the Great War

William Cross, FSA Scot explores and appraises the brave contribution made by several woman aristocrats of High Society in nursing the wounded during the Great War, at home and in the theatres of war from 1914 till 1918.


Some Society Angels of the Great War: Using research material from his book “ Lady Carnarvon’s Nursing Homes : Nursing the Privileged in Wartime and Peace” William Cross explores and appraises the brave contribution made by several woman aristocrats of High Society in nursing the wounded during the Great War, at home and in the theatres of war. Among the ladies featured are Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland and her sister Lady Angela Forbes ( fictionalised in the TV epic ‘ The Monocled Mutineer’,) Lady Diana Manners ( later Lady Duff Cooper ) and Nellie Hozier ( sister of Clementine Churchill ), who was one of the first women to take a party of doctors and nurses to Belgium in 1914 in time to help with the carnage of Mons. The painting featured here in of Lady Rosemary Leveson Gower who served for four years in field hospitals in France.

William Cross, FSA Scot is the author of “ Lady Carnarvon’s Nursing Homes : Nursing the Privileged in Wartime and Peace” which includes a great deal of data about hospitals set up for the war wounded in the Great War, 1914-1918. He is currently researching a biography for a of Lady Rosemary Leveson Gower.
