Climate change, habitat loss and biodiversity

Jane Hill will examine how long-term data on migration patterns of moths and butterflies is being used to mitigate the effects of climate change on biodiversity loss.

Global climate is changing. In response, many species are shifting their geographical distributions, migrating into new areas and disappearing from their previous habitats. In Britain, generations of butterfly and moth enthusiasts have provided a wealth of historical information that is being used to inform current conservation efforts. Learn how long-term patterns of climate-driven range changes are being used to improve current habitat management to prevent future extinctions and biodiversity loss.

Jane is a member of the Council of the British Ecological Society, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ecological Entomology and was awarded the March/ZSL Award for Conservation Biology in 2011.

The Stamford Raffles Lecture is the highlight of ZSL's annual programme Science and Conservation Events. Established in 1995, the lectures have been given by eminent speakers on a wide range of zoological topics. It is preceded by the annual Awards Ceremony.
