Unequal equalities: group music-making as deliberative democracy

Professor Robert Adlington (University of Huddersfield) examines the concept of democracy in music-making.

Over the past century many musical groups have claimed to operate according to democratic principles, in which each participant has an equal say in decision-making. Professor Robert Adlington (University of Huddersfield) examines these claims in the light of recent theoretical writing on deliberative democracy, with the aim of arriving at a more nuanced understanding of what ‘equality’ might mean in such contexts.
