In this lecture-recital, Professor Eva Moreda (University of Glasgow) and Ricardo Gosalbo (Guildhall School) look back at the beginnings of commercial recorded music in Spain.
In this lecture-recital, Professor Eva Moreda (University of Glasgow) and Ricardo Gosalbo (Guildhall School) look back at the beginnings of commercial recorded music in Spain, both in the hands of multinationals such as Gramophone and Victor, and small-scale local businesses (the so-called ‘gabinetes fonográficos’) which recorded on wax cylinders.
Particular attention will be paid to the first Spanish opera and zarzuela singers to record for the phonograph and gramophone, whose voices open up a fascinating window on the singing techniques and repertoires that Spaniards were familiar with around 1900.
