Illustrated talk

'Jules Verne: Myths and Realities' by Tim Unwin

In the century since his death, Jules Verne has become an icon of technology and progress. Yet all too often his work is simplistically branded as 'futuristic'. This illustrated talk places Verne back in context as a nineteenth-century Frenchman whose radical mission was to make contemporary science acceptable in a fictional context. Tim Unwin is Professor of French at the University of Bristol. He is the author of a new study on Jules Verne entitled Jules Verne: Journeys in Writing (LUP, 2005). As part of Lire en fête – Around Jules Verne in One Day.
