Missionaries and Slavery in Nineteenth Century British West Africa

Dr Jolliffe will discuss the attitudes of missionary societies active in British West Africa in the 19th century towards slavery

Speaker: Dr Clive Jolliffe, University Collge of Fraser Valley, British Columbia.

Dr Jolliffe will discuss the attitudes of missionary societies active in British West Africa in the 19th century towards slavery, especially that of women. Tracing the changing attitudes by the missionary societies towards West African domestic slavery during the 19th century reveals how they eventually came to condemn this institution after considerable heart searching late into the 19th century.
