Ian Berry: A Life Apart

Renowned for his work which helped draw the world’s gaze upon South Africa’s apartheid regime, Ian Berry will offer a gripping insight into his path to photojournalism and his significant coverage of a changing South Africa. Ian will also be signing copies of his books.

The Lecture will be accompanied by an exhibition of images taken by township youth infected with or affected by HIV/Aids, trained in photojournalism skills by award-winning international charity PhotoVoice.

The Series comprises four illustrated lectures held at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society, London, in association with the world-renowned photographic co-operative Magnum Photos who celebrate their 60th anniversary this year. Subsequent lectures include a rare panel debate by Magnum Photographers, chaired by Internationally acclaimed author, journalist and broadcaster Charles Glass, focusing on the contentious complexities of the Middle East (11 July 2007); and Martin Parr whose controversial approach to social documentary in the United Kingdom is sure to yield a fascinating debate about the role of photojournalism today (13 November 2007).

Philip will be signing copies of his books, Vietnam Inc., Vietnam at Peace and Agent Orange. Many thanks to Trolley Books who have generously offered to donate 30% of all money raised through book sales to PhotoVoice.

Guests will also be invited to view an exhibition of images taken by street and working children in Vietnam and orphans in Cambodia, trained in photojournalism skills by PhotoVoice.

Proceeds from the Lecture Series will enable PhotoVoice to continue its work providing marginalised communities with photographic training with which they can advocate, express themselves and generate income. PhotoVoice is a registered charity 1096598.
