Japan's Primary Education and its Relevance for Britain

Dr Peter Cave presents a talk about primary education in Japan and its relevance for the UK.

Japanese primary education has attracted considerable praise for its success in combining human and intellectual development, as well as for its egalitarian ethos and organisation. Curricular and pedagogical reforms in the last 15 years have aimed to give more scope for children to develop both their individual strengths, while deepening their ability to relate to others. In this talk, based on ethnographic research at Japanese primary schools between 1994 and 2004, Peter Cave argues that the best Japanese primary teaching uses a dialogical approach that enables children to learn from one another, as well as from the teacher, in a ‘community of inquiry’. Successful teachers build a supportive classroom community in which children feel secure about sharing thoughts and ideas. These Japanese practices suggest the efficacy of dialogic approaches to teaching and learning, which are also of relevance to practices in British primary schools.
This talk will be held in conjunction with a book launch for Dr Peter Cave's book "Primary School in Japan: Self, Individuality and Learning in Elementary Education".
