Negotiating a new international response to Climate Change: the prospects for COP-15 in Copenhagen 2

FT Business – LSE European Institute The Future of Europe lecture series with the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment

Climate change is one of the most complex global challenges the world currently faces. Unless dealt with, climate change will potentially have disastrous effects on nature and human societies. It is the aim that a new global agreement shall be concluded at COP15 in Copenhagen in December 2009. Connie Hedegaard will share her observations on the status of the international negotiations and dwell upon hurdles and deadlocks that must be overcome in order to reach agreement.

Connie Hedegaard is Danish Minister for Climate and Energy, a position she has held since November 2007. Previous government posts have included Minister for the Environment and Minister for Nordic Cooperation (2005-2007) and Minister for the Environment (2004-2005). Ms Hedegaard has particular responsibility for preparing the UN Environmental Summit in Copenhagen in 2009.

Hilary Benn MP is Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs a position he has held since June 2007. Prior to this he served as Secretary of State for International Development. He leads for the UK in international negotiations on sustainable development and climate change.

This event is one of a series of events marking the establishment of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE, and also forms part of the FT Business – LSE European Institute The Future of Europe lecture series.
