As a complement to the screening of Sho Igarashi's film Chosyu Five as part of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme, Dr Andrew Cobbing will give a special lecture on the historical context of the Choshu Five.

Including future statesmen Ito Hirobumi and Inoue Kaoru, the arrival of these five young students in the UK in 1863 marked an important stage both in the development of Japan, as well as in relations with the UK.

Dr Cobbing, lecturer in the School of History at the University of Nottingham, will share his expertise on the experiences of early samurai travellers in a short lecture, followed by discussion.
