He introduced Private Members’ Bills to incorporate the European Human Rights Convention into UK law, as well as Civil Partnership, Equality, and Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Bills. He has argued many leading cases (including cases on free speech and on discrimination) not only before English courts, but also before both European courts and Commonwealth courts. One case involved East African Asians v. United Kingdom.

He explores the various meanings given to multiculturalism, integration, assimilation, as well as the relationship between the right to equality and dignity for ethnic and religious minorities and the right to freedom of expression.
