"Multiculturalism and Free Speech" by Lord Lester of Herne Hill, QC , INTERIGHTS

Lord Lester of Herne Hill, President of INTERIGHTS visits De Montfort University to give a free lecture as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.

President of INTERIGHTS (The International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights)

Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC is a practising member of Blackstone Chambers, and a Liberal Democrat Peer. He specialises in public law and European human rights law. He was Special Adviser to the Home Secretary, Roy Jenkins, from 1974-76 with responsibility for policy advice on human rights. He introduced Private Members’ Bills to incorporate the European Human Rights Convention into UK law, as well as Civil Partnership, Equality, and Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Bills. He has argued many leading cases (including cases on free speech and on discrimination) not only before English courts, but also before both European courts and Commonwealth courts. One case involved East African Asians v. United Kingdom.

Lord Lester is President of INTERIGHTS (the International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights), and has published numerous books and articles on constitutional law and human rights. He is also an Honorary Doctor of De Montfort University, receiving his award in 2005.

In his lecture, Lord Lester tackles the complex and sensitive issues of multiculturalism and free speech. He explores the various meanings given to multiculturalism, integration, assimilation, as well as the relationship between the right to equality and dignity for ethnic and religious minorities and the right to freedom of expression.
