Write smart and publish well

Are you a novelist, poet or writer producing original content? Learn how to protect your IP.

When: 28.10.09 at 10:00
Where: Marriot Hotel, Old Elvet, Durham, DH1 3JN
Are you a novelist, poet or writer producing original content?
Join us for a full-day session with key industry speakers to learn how to protect your IP. Lunch will be provided
Whether you are new to writing or you are an experienced writer, you need to know about copyright law if you are to enforce your rights. Your original work has great potential value, but keeping hold of this asset or being paid appropriately can be challenging. This event will help you answer important questions about copyright and provide personal insight from a successful writer and agent.
We will look at a range of issues including:
• How do I protect my copyright?
• Do I need to register my work and if so with whom?
• How do I protect myself when sending work out to agents, producers etc?
• What impact can the internet have on my work?
• How do I protect my intellectual property from adaptation and/or theft?
• If my work is influenced by real events is there a copyright issue?
Speakers will include: Isobel Dixon, agent and writer at Blake Friedman and Alex Shiel, head of the intellectual property and information technology (IP/IT) unit at Ward Hadaway.
This event is being organised in association with New Writing North and the Durham Book Festival.
The order for the day will be as follows:
10-10.30am: Coffee and registration
10.30-11.30am: What is IP?
11.30am-1pm: Isobel Dixon on 'what a writer needs to know'
1-2pm: Lunch
2-4pm: 'Ask the expert' with Alex Shiel (legal presentation followed by Q&A)
4-5pm: Networking
