Plato's Symposium

A one-day workshop exploring the beautiful truths of Plato's Symposium.

Who is not moved by love? But who can say what it is, and what it is not? To some, philosophy may seem have little to do with love: but philosophy means “the love of wisdom” and one of the greatest works on the subject of love is the Symposium of Plato.
This workshop will explore the profound depths of the dialogue, looking at the extraordinary detail of its dramatic setting, its use of myth, initiatory language and symbol.
A day spent considering its spoken and unspoken insights is likely to transform the participants’ understanding of both love and philosophy. Although the Symposium has almost inexhaustible depths of meaning, it is also delightfully accessible to the non-specialist: whether you are a newcomer to philosophy or an experienced student you will find within it a banquet of wisdom.
The workshop will be led by Tim Addey, devotee of Platonic philosophy and author of The Seven Myths of the Soul, Beyond the Shadows and The Unfolding Wings and regular tutor for the Prometheus Trust’s educational course, Philosophy as the Love of Wisdom.
