The Future of Capitalism and Globalisation: Global Perspectives and a European Agenda

LSE European Institute - APCO Worldwide Perspectives on Europe Series

The subprime crisis and the global recession are receding. But what will be their long-term consequences? What future awaits globalization, international relations, and the market economy? What are the global trends of crisis policies and what do they mean for the post-crisis world? These fundamental questions will be addressed at an evening debate that will offer both the big global picture and the view from the new EU Commissioner for Trade.

Marc De Vos will present his new book After the Meltdown: the Future of Capitalism and Globalization in the Age of the Twin Crises. He will demonstrate how the financial and the economic crises are inducing tectonic shifts that will alter the future course of capitalism and globalization well beyond the issue of financial markets and economic recovery. He will show how crisis actions and policies are forging a return of heavy handed state capitalism, with a new paradigm on governments and markets. He will argue how a strategic alliance of the US and the EU will be necessary in the New Normal of a post-crisis world.

Karel De Gucht will address the EU trade agenda, discuss the global challenges of free trade in the upcoming years, and offer personal perspectives on the future path of the world economy.

Karel De Gucht is European Commissioner for Trade, having taken up this post in February 2010. Prior to this he served as European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid (2009-2010), Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium (2008-2009) and Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of Belgium from 2004-2009. From 1991 to 2009 he was Professor in European law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Marc De Vos is a professor at the Ghent University law school and the general director of the Itinera Institute, a non-partisan policy think-tank in Brussels. He frequently publishes, lectures and debates on issues of European integration, globalization, labour market reform, pensions, aging, healthcare, and the welfare state.

This event celebrates the publication of Marc De Vos latest book, After the Meltdown: the Future of Capitalism and Globalization in the Age of the Twin Crises|, published by Shoehorn Books.
