Going Native, Being Native: Anthropology of Western Magic

What happens when the native becomes anthropological researcher?

What happens when the native becomes anthropological researcher? What happens when the native anthropological researcher has experiences of magic that challenge the accepted conventions of anthropology? Dr Susan Greenwood has used her own experience to exploring 'magical consciousness' -- challenging the discipline's preferred position of the researcher not 'going native.' She has developed a new research methodology, one that explores the relationship between magical practitioner and inspirited world. In this talk she reflects on her twenty years of fieldwork in western magical traditions and asks, 'What can be learned from such direct experience?' She is Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, and author of Magic, Witchcraft and the Otherworld (Berg 2000),The Encyclopedia of Magic and Witchcraft (Lorenz 2001), The Nature of Magic (Berg 2005) and The Anthropology of Magic (Berg 2009).
