Supporting Parents of Troubled Teenagers

If popular representations are to be believed the behaviour of many of our teenagers is worsening rapidly. What’s more, the responsibility for all this is often laid to rest at the door of parents whose confidence is severely depleted.

Caring for adolescents is often challenging at the best of times, but when young people choose the troubled or troublesome route to adulthood they stretch their parents’ resources to the limit. Caring professions are beginning to take up the challenge of supporting such parents, but in doing so often meet barriers of resistance, anger and despair which hinder their effectiveness.

Richard Brook’s inspiring and interactive workshop will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to get past this so you can work effectively with both parents and families to promote subtle, but important, changes that will benefit everyone alike.
What you gain from the day:

* A clear, scientifically-based model for understanding the cause of family conflict and teenage troubles
* A range of proven skills and techniques to improve family functioning
* Increased ability and confidence to engage therapeutically with parents and families in a variety of context
* A chance to practice some of the skills that enable practitioners to advise and assist parents and families effectively in difficult times.

Who should attend

Social workers, youth workers, youth offending workers, volunteers, mentors, counsellors, teachers, housing officers, mental health workers, education welfare officers, fostering and residential care workers. The workshop is suitable for anyone who is involved with the parents or carers of teenagers and older children.
