Writers on the Run

Masterpieces of 20th Century Refugee Literature.

Many of the great modern Jewish writers were refugees. Many of the most popular British screenwriters and novelists were Jewish refugees, including Tom Stoppard, Emeric Pressburger, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (most of the Merchant Ivory films). This short course casts the net wide, looking at the full range of how writers have written about their own – and others’ – experience as refugees.

Arthur Koestler, Scum of the Earth (1941).

Vladmimir Nabokov, Pnin (1957).

George Steiner, Anno Domini (1964).

Judith Kerr, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (1971).

Eva Hoffman, Lost in Translation (1989).

WG Sebald, The Emigrants (1993).
