Video Communication over the Internet

Professor of Media Technology, Prof Raouf Hamzaoui discusses recent advances in video compression and networking technologies.

Recent advances in video compression and networking technologies have enabled a wide range of Internet video applications such as Internet TV, video conferencing, and online gaming. In the first part of the lecture, I will give an overview of these applications, highlighting the main concepts and technologies behind them. The second part of the lecture will focus on research at De Montfort University that has shown how system adaptation to network conditions can help maximise received video quality. Finally, I will present new directions in which Internet video applications are likely to evolve.

Raouf Hamzaoui received the Maitrise degree in mathematics from the Faculty of Sciences of Tunis in 1986, the M.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Montreal, in 1993, the Dr. rer. nat. degree from the University of Freiburg, Germany, in 1997, and the Habilitation degree in computer science from the University of Konstanz, in 2004. He was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Computer Science, University of Leipzig and with the Department of Computer and Information Science, University of Konstanz. In September 2006, he joined De Montfort University, where he has been a Professor of media technology with the Faculty of Technology. He has published more than 50 research papers. His recent research has focused on the design of efficient error control algorithms for fast and robust transmission of image and video data. He has worked, in particular, on highly adaptive systems that exploit media content and channel conditions to optimize end-to-end quality. Dr. Hamzaoui is a member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, the Journal of Multimedia and the Open Electrical and Electronic Engineering Journal, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Pattern Recognition.
