From Victorian Marxism to Soviet Marxism: The Rothstein Saga

David Burke looks at the development of Marxism and the competing influences and political realities which shaped the Rothsteins.

Theodore (1871-1953) and Andrew (1898-1994) Rothstein will need no introduction to members of the Library. They were respectively seminal figures at the Twentieth Century Press and the Marx Library. Both helped to forge the British Communist Party, took part in the Russian Revolution and worked as distinguished historians and writers.
In this lecture, David Burke looks at the development of Marxism in the British Isles and the competing influences and political realities which shaped father and son, and took them from the ethics of Tolstoy Colony along the road to revolutionary Socialism.
