A panel discussion looking at contemporary art practice
To launch his debut book Manual Labour, Lockhart will lead a panel discussion on
Thursday 18 November discussing the merits and issues that arise out of practice that
acknowledges the contribution made by non-artists who inform, positively influence and
contribute to the production of their work. The panel will include presentations by fellow
artists Joshua Sofaer, Katy Beinart and Melanie Manchot,
Lockhart has been artist in residence at Rose Hill and Littlemore Children’s Centre,
Oxford, as part of their Saturdads programme (a drop in session for dads and their
children) since 2006, as part of the Gallery’s Art in Rose Hill programme. He has been
developing his own practice in parallel to his collaborative making with participants at the
sessions. The publication, Manual Labour, is a remarkable record of the shared activities
presented in the form of a handbook that can be used to inspire creative collaborations
between parents / carers and their children.
Michael Stanley, Director of Modern Art Oxford, said – “Such enduring pleasure and
continual inventiveness in fashioning art from the stuff of the everyday world around us are
recurring themes and motifs in Jon Lockhart’s Manual Labour. The publication is a
remarkable record of the artist’s evolving series of workshops held at Rose Hill’s Children’s
Centre as part of Modern Art Oxford’s Art in Rose Hill Programme.”
