Crossing Borders- Andrew Motion in conversation with Rebecca Jones

Royal Society of Literature Literary Festival event

Former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion has spent most of his forty years as a writer negotiating the borders between poetry and prose, between memory and imagination, and between public and private life. Through media appearances, readings, lectures and broadcasts, he gave the Laureateship a higher profile than ever before, but admitted that this had taken its toll on his work. His most recent work is Laurels and Donkeys (2010), a collection of poems about war, and he is working on a sequel to Treasure Island to be published in 2012. He talks to BBC Arts Correspondent Rebecca Jones about his life and work.

Membership of the Royal Society of Literature is open to all. 2010 speakers have included: Margaret Atwood on the environment, David Hare on documentary and fiction; Seamus Heaney on a lifetime in poetry, Ian McEwan on originality and Marilynne Robinson on her life and work.

Forthcoming spring 2011 highlights include- Antony Beevor on the perils of faction; A.S Byatt, Bidisha and Philip Hensher reassess Iris Murdoch; Wendy Cope, Jackie Kay and Hugo Williams on writing about love; Michael Cunningham on By Nightfall; Amitav Ghosh on River of Smoke; Colin Thubron on his “secular pilgrimage” to Tibet; and Hilary Spurling and Xin Ran on Chinese women.
