Speak Up, Speak Out: The 1942 UN Declaration on the Persecution of the Jews

A Special Lecture by Dr Dan Plesch to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2012

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 is ‘Speak Up Speak Out’, and to mark this occasion the Library is delighted to welcome Dr Dan Plesch (SOAS) to give a lecture on the 1942 UN Declaration on the Persecution of the Jews and the creation of the UN War Crimes Commission in 1943. 2012 will mark the 70th anniversary of the 1942 Declaration, and Dr Plesch will take this opportunity to revisit the explicit, public and multi-national condemnation of the extermination of Europe's Jews in Poland and the subsequent creation of the seventeen nation UN War Crimes Commission of 1943-48.

Dr Dan Plesch is Director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at the School of Oriental and African Studies and is author of ‘America, Hitler and the UN’. Dr Plesch's presentation will highlight his recent archival research at the UN and point to lessons of that era for twenty first century International Criminal Law.
