Englishness under Fire: The Great War and English identity

The pressure of the First World War led to the redrawing of what it meant to be English.


This lecture examines the way English Identity became more restrictive in the War years, and how minority groups found themselves marginalised. For many people the strong heroic male came to embody the true spirit of Englishness
