Cyclone Disaster Relief in Madagascar

David Hatcher of UK-based charity ShelterBox will tell us how the charity helps thousands of cyclone victims in Madagascar.

Our speaker will be David Hatcher, a former police superintendent and BBC Crimewatch presenter, who is a member of the disaster response team for UK-based charity ShelterBox.

ShelterBox Response Teams have deployed to Madagascar for the last three cyclone seasons, so far distributing 745 giant green boxes of disaster relief supplies – most recently in March 2013 after Cyclone Haruna hit southern Madagascar. Each box contains a 10-man tent, blankets, and other essentials for locals who have lost their homes and possessions. David will tell us how the charity works and how their operations have helped thousands of cyclone victims in Madagascar.

The ticket price for the evening event includes a free bar and delicious Malagasy buffet. There will be a chance to chat with the speaker and mingle with others to chat about Madagascar before and after the lecture. The lecture coincides with Madagascar Independence Day so we hope to have live Malagasy music too. The society's AGM will also be incorporated into the evening – but this normally only takes a couple of minutes to get through!
