The Marginalised in a Meritocratic Society: Attitudes to Those with Learning Disability.

A Global Health Forum hosted by Medsin-Imperial - a student society at Imperial College London

In the UK, the school environment with large classes alongside pressures adolescence, as well as the focus on academic success, can increase the stigma of such a disability. Much of the developing world remains in a state of denial of learning disability.

This evening will discuss the impact of Learning disbility on health, social and family dynamics, and how education, and especially healthcare might better provide for those with learning disability.

Jack Piachaud is the Clinical Director of the Eric Shepherd Unit in Watford, Hertfordshire. He was the Medical Director of Horizon NHS Trust between 1998 and 2002, and has been a consultant psychiatrist in learning disabilities since 1981 and an honorary senior lecturer at St Mary’s and Imperial College London since 1987.
