Showmen of the Streets - a documentary film by John Lawrenson

Free lunchtime film screening

Welcome to the Open Air Palace of Varieties! Meet the Mighty Atom, the Amazing Blondini, Prince Monolulu, Lord Mustard and The Man with X-Ray Eyes! London was their backdrop and the streets their stage. These showmen could stand on a street corner, gather a crowd, keep them entertained and (hopefully) be rewarded in cash – sometimes whilst defying the long arm of the law. Set against a backdrop of London from the 1930’s to the 60’s, this film traces a tradition of people who chose to defy class structure and take their chances on the road, in a theatrical business slightly above begging.
