This presentation will introduce, discuss and evaluate C.U.Pâs work in Chapeltown, Leeds in June 2011 as part of East Street Artsâ programme of ânew genre public artâ entitled âUnder The Paving Stones, The Beachâ.
Tues October 11th, 5.15pm, University of Leeds
âWho Owns Chapeltown?â was originally a presentation entitled âNeither âArtâ Nor âPsychogeographyâ: The Impossibility of The Chapeltown Union of Psychogeographers (C.U.P)â planned to be given to the Leeds Psychogeography Group on 22 March 2011 but which was cancelled in support of UCU industrial action at the time. This rescheduled presentation will still introduce, discuss and evaluate C.U.Pâs work in Chapeltown, Leeds in June 2011 as part of East Street Artsâ programme of ânew genre public artâ entitled âUnder The Paving Stones, The Beachâ. The project produced âThe Saucerâ: a newspaper publication hand-delivered to households throughout Chapeltown, a major billboard intervention on Chapeltown Road, a permanent plaque at East Street Artsâ Union 105 creative space and the website: www.experiencechapeltown.com
Core members of C.U.P taking part in this project included artists Pamela Bassington, Robert Harrington, Roddy Hunter, Millie Marten and Elizabeth Murphy. âWho Owns Chapeltown?â will probably still conclude that neither âartâ nor âpsychogeographyâ are particularly useful terms in practice and probably ought to be circumvented in future.
