From the Anglo-American Relations lecture series.
Both Louis XIV in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and Napoleon in the nineteenth made France the most powerful country on the Continent. Indeed, Napoleon can be considered the first man since Charlemagne in the ninth century to have unified Europe. In both cases, Britain played an important role in Franceâs defeat.
