The Azmari Goes Global: Ethnicity, Identity and Migration in Ethiopian-Israeli Music

An overview of Ethiopian music in the large community of emigrants in and around Tel Aviv, Israel.

The presentation will offer an overview of Ethiopian music in the large community of emigrants in and around Tel Aviv, Israel. Beginning with Azmari music and Eskesta dancing that is performed in Azmari-betotch as well as community centres and concert halls, the complex relationship that the adult generation has with both Ethiopian and Israeli society will be explained. In addition, some of the directions that young people have taken with Ethiopian popular music, and the ways that they connect musically with young Ethiopians in Addis Ababa and the US, will be described.
