A Lecture by Youssef Amrani, secretary general of the Union for the Mediterranean

Youssef Amrani assumed his position as the secretary general of the Union for the Mediterranean on 1 July 2011. Prior to that, he was the secretary general at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. He also served as director general of bilateral affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. His diplomatic career started back in1984, as an international expert, Islamic Centre for Development and Commerce; 1989-90, chief of staff, State Secretariat, in charge of Maghreb Arab Union, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.1990-92, counselor of the minister of Energy and Mines, Morocco; 1992-96, consul general of Morocco to Barcelona; 1996-99, ambassador of Morocco to Colombia and non-resident to Ecuador and Panama; 1999-2001, ambassador of Morocco to Chile; 2001-03, ambassador of Morocco to Mexico and non-resident to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Belize. Youssef Amrani led the successful negotiations with the EU to grant Morocco the advanced status.

Youssef Amrani was born in Tangier (Morocco) in 1953. He is a recipient of awards including Legion d'Honneur, France
