Professor Robert Tittler
Conventional accounts of early Stuart painting imply that London was the sole centre of activity while provincial England remained a cultural wasteland. In fact, painters of all sorts were active in the regions as well. This lecture demonstrates that Chester presents the best example of English provincial painting during the period 1600-1640. Over 30 painters worked here producing portraits bearing characteristics distinct to that time & place.
