An expedition to study people & reptiles of southeast Madagascar

Zoologist Mark Scherz will talk about a recent expedition to Madagascar to study tortoises and how they are affected by the local human population.

Edinburgh University zoologist Mark Scherz recently led a research expedition of herpetologists and anthropologists to southern Madagascar, studying the effects of anthropomorphic disturbance on reptile populations and assessing the status of the radiated tortoise in an area of spiny forest designated as 'utility' forest.

Mark will talk about this expedition; the status of this forest and the spiny forest and radiated tortoises in general; student-lead expeditions in Madagascar; and current NGO work in the Ifotaka-North New Protected Area, and their successes and failings.

The ticket price for the evening event includes a free bar and delicious Malagasy buffet. There will be a chance to chat with the speaker and mingle with others to chat about Madagascar before and after the lecture.

Venue: Upper Vestry Hall at St George's Bloomsbury (near Tottenham Court Road and Holborn underground stations).
