Prof Julia King - The Future of Transport:

Professor Julia King will look at how we can deliver personal mobility in developed countries and globally, in ways that are sustainable, affordable and effective.

Since the King Review was published in 2007/8, the focus on carbon emissions from transport has increased. Globally, transport accounts for around 14% of CO2 emissions, typically contributing 20% of emissions in developed countries with a peak in North America, where transport emissions make up one third of the total. Over 50% of the world’s oil production is used in transport. The global car parc consists of almost a billion vehicles today, and this number is predicted to double by 2030. With a world population of 9 billion, there could be 3 billion cars by 2050.
Clearly, this is not a sustainable position: to avoid damaging impacts of climate change we need to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 50% globally by 2050 and by around 80% in the developed world. But, personal mobility is critical to enabling growth in developing economies.
The lecture will look at how we can deliver personal mobility, in developed countries and globally, in ways that are sustainable, affordable and effective.
