Department of Economics public lecture
The Great Recession is more than four years old—and counting. Yet, “Nations rich in resources, talent, and knowledge—all the ingredients for prosperity and a decent standard of living for all—remain in a state of intense pain.â€
In his new book, End This Depression Now! which he will discuss in this event Krugman shows how the failure of regulation to keep pace with an increasingly out-of-control financial system positioned the United States and the world as a whole, for the greatest financial crisis since the 1930s. Decrying the tepid response thus far, he lays out the steps that must be taken to free ourselves and turn around a world economy stagnating in deep recession. His is a powerful message: a strong recovery is only one step away, if our leaders find the intellectual clarity and political will to see it through.
Paul Krugman, the recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics, is a best-selling author, columnist and blogger for The New York Times. A professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton University, The Economist called him “the most celebrated economist of his generationâ€.

This event is free and open to all however a ticket is required, only one ticket per person can be requested. Members of the public, LSE staff, students and alumni can request one ticket via the online ticket request form which will be live on the event weblisting after 10pm Thursday 17 May till at least 12noon on Friday 18 May. If at 12noon we have received more requests than there are tickets available, the line will be closed, and tickets will be allocated on a random basis to those requests received. If we have received fewer requests than tickets available, the ticket line will stay open until all tickets have been allocated. LSE students and staff are also able to collect one ticket per person from the New Academic Building SU shop, located on the Kingsway side of the building from 10.00am on Friday 18 May. These tickets are available on a first come, first come basis. Please note, we cannot control exactly when the ticket line will upload, and publishing delays do sometimes occur. As the system now allows requests to be made over a long period of time, if when you visit the event weblisting the ticket line is not live, we would advise revisiting the page at a later time. |
